This project explores the Franc CFA as the legal tender in French West Africa and the efforts of a new political alliance to break away from French control. Between November 1884 and February 1885 the world powers met in Berlin Germany and divided Africa in what we know as “The scramble for Africa’ among its members awarding a very large portion to France. This gave France the opportunity to control the economy and resources of a large part of West Africa with the help of the Internation monetary fund (IMF). In the last few years, France has come under fire and met serious resistance after military coup in some of its former colonies. These acts which is aimed at renegotiating their own reality set the stage for me to reflect on this issue. I decided to reconstruct the Franc cfa as a way of responding to this notion of decolonize and deconstruct by using terms and pointers related to France and her allies like the international monetary fund and the Berlin conference. The bills were reconstructed with images that represents fragments of the everyday I collect as I journey through time and space.
